Seedlings for Community Garden - Hybrid Project

Do you have a green thumb? Want to learn how to nurture and grow plants from seed?

This project is our second hybrid project. There will be a virtual portion and in person portion for youth that secure a spot on the roster. Please make sure you are available for both portions. The first part of the project will be conducted on September 11th through a Zoom call where youth will learn to grow and nurture plants from seed at home. The second part will be the in person portion of the project that will take place on October 3rd at the Parkview Community Garden where youth will plant the seedlings they nurtured at home and begin seedlings for a second planting in mid October.

Required materials for Zoom call: PC, laptop or smartphone with webcam, internet access, seed kit (provided by YVCHR that will need to be picked up before September 11th)

Required materials for In Person Portion: Face mask, seedlings you nurtured, sunscreen, bug spray

Optional materials for In Person Portion: small shovel, work gloves

Youth will need reliable internet access and a webcam in order to participate in the Zoom call. The Zoom link will be provided via email and arrangements will be made to get seed kits to those who are registered for the project using the online form. Space is limited to 8 youth for this hybrid project.

On September 11th, a couple minutes before 4 pm, simply click on the project link from a phone, laptop or PC. If you have never used Zoom, it will ask you to download the software. It will take a couple of minutes, so plan accordingly as we will start promptly at 4:00 pm. Youth will need to enable their webcam AND microphone so they can interact during the call. Be sure to test the audio capabilities prior to the project, and consider using headphones so you can be hands free. Make sure to have your seed kit ready as well.

During the call on the 11th, a Team Leader will facilitate an icebreaker, a service-learning activity, and then our special guest gardener will give instructions on constructing pots, planting and care of the plants. Instructions and information will be given at the end of the call for the in person portion on October 3rd.
