Financial literacy is the possession of skills that allows people to make smart decisions with their money. It allows people to live securely, prepare for the future and give generously to the causes close to their hearts. The youth of today can be the philanthropists of tomorrow if they understand how to manage their money and this virtual project is aimed at helping them do that.
Required materials: PC or laptop with webcam, internet access, PLUS a separate device (phone, iPad, etc.) with free financial app downloaded.
Youth will need reliable internet access and a webcam in order to participate in the Zoom call. The Zoom link will be provided via email to those who register for the project using the online form.
Prior to the project, please download the free financial app. The name of the app will be sent once a spot has been secured on the roster. On May 1st, a couple minutes before 1 pm, simply click on the project link from a laptop or PC. If you have never used Zoom, it will ask you to download the software. It will take a couple of minutes, so plan accordingly as we will start promptly at 1:00 pm. Youth will need to enable their webcam and microphone so they can interact during the call. Youth will also need to have access to another device with the app for the budget simulation. Be sure to test the audio capabilities prior to the project, and consider using headphones to avoid distractions.
During the call, a Team Leader will facilitate an icebreaker then a financial educator from BayPort Credit Union will lead an interactive budgeting simulation. Youth will have the opportunity to learn the principles that will enable them to become more financially secure now and in the future.
