Teams of youth volunteers from 19 area schools will come together at Patrick Henry Mall on April 27th for Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads’ 8th annual Canstructure Competition. Students from K-12 schools will build structures entirely out of canned food in a creative display of service to the community. Students collect food for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, while showcasing their creative designs and eagerness to alleviate hunger in our community. The theme for this year’s competition is Out of This World!
“The Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads (YVCHR) Canstructure Competition is an exciting event that brings out the creativeness of our students while at the same time giving back to their community” said Donna Tighe, Director of Development at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. The students’ compassion to make a difference is truly inspiring, especially when you see the amazing structures that they build out of the thousands of non-perishable food items that they have collected over several months. This event comes at a time when our donations are down and the need remains great.”
